Searching for low-mass axions using resonant upconversion

چکیده

We present new results of a room temperature resonant AC haloscope, which searches for axions via photon upconversion. Traditional haloscopes require strong applied DC magnetic background field surrounding the haloscope cavity resonator, frequency is limited by available bore dimensions. UPLOAD, UPconversion Low-Noise Oscillator Axion Detection experiment, replaces this magnet with second microwave resonance within detector cavity, upconverts energy from axion into readout mode, accessing around beat modes. Furthermore, unlike case, experiment sensitive to newly proposed quantum electromagnetodynamical coupling term $g_{aBB}$. Two experimental approaches are outlined - one using metrology, and other power detection thermal mode. The presented, allows exclusion masses between 1.12 $-$ 1.20 $\mu eV$ above strength both $g_{a\gamma\gamma}$ $g_{aBB}$ at $3 \times 10^{-6}$ 1/GeV, after measurement period 30 days, three order magnitude improvement over our previous result.

Search for solar axions with mass around 1 eV using coherent conversion of axions into photons

A search for solar axions has been performed using an axion helioscope which is equipped with a 2.3-m long 4T superconducting magnet, a gas container to hold dispersion-matching gas, PIN-photodiode X-ray detectors, and a telescope mount mechanism to track the sun. A mass region around ma = 1eV was newly explored. From the absence of any evidence, analysis sets a limit on axion-photon coupling c...

Natural Theories of Ultra–Low Mass PNGB’s: Axions and Quintessence

We consider the Wilson Line PNGB which arises in a U(1) gauge theory, abstracted from a latticized, periodically compactified extra dimension U(1). Planck scale breaking of the PNGB’s global symmetry is suppressed, providing natural candidates for the axion and quintessence. We construct an explicit model in which the axion may be viewed as the 5th component of the U(1)Y gauge field in a 1+4 la...

Testing PVLAS axions with resonant photon splitting

The photon splitting γ → γγ in a time-independent and inhomogeneous magnetized background is considered when neutral and ultra-light spin-0 particles are coupled to two-photons. Depending on the inhomogeneity scale of the external field, resonant photon splitting can occur. If an optical laser crosses a magnetic field of few Tesla with typical inhomogeneity scale of the order of the meter, a po...

Searching for energetic cosmic axions in a laboratory experiment

Astrophysical sources of energetic gamma rays provide the right conditions for maximal mixing between (pseudo)scalar (axion-like) particles and photons if their coupling is strong enough. This is independent of whether or not the axion interaction is standard at all energies or becomes suppressed in the extreme conditions of the stellar interior. The flux of such particles through the Earth cou...

Searching for axions and ALPs from string theory

We review searches for closed string axions and axion-like particles (ALPs) in IIB string flux compactifications. For natural values of the background fluxes and TeV scale gravitino mass, the moduli stabilisation mechanism of the LARGE Volume Scenario predicts the existence of a QCD axion candidate with intermediate scale decay constant, fa ∼ 10 9÷12 GeV, associated with the small cycles wrappe...
